Despacito is a song from 2017 released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It was the most streamed and downloaded song in the world within 6 months. The combination of reggaeton and pop music not only brought an interest to the genre, but as well to Latin music as a whole. The Billboard Top 100 had four songs mostly in Spanish by 2016 compared to two in 2015. In the midst of the Despacito's popularity in 2017 there were 19 mainly Spanish tracks that made the top 100. And in 2020 there were 41. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists began to collaborate with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together on MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma. Madonna joined forces with Maluma on Medellin, 2019 By 2020 a few reggaeton stars were complaining about the genre's direction toward the mainstream. However, a younger generation, led by Rauw Alejandro was determined to continue the evolution of reggaeton. It often blended elements from electronic dance music as well as other genres.
